Ready Player One by Ernest Cline is a super exciting story about a teenager named Wade Watts who lives in a not-so-great future where the real world has become pretty miserable. To escape, most people spend their time in a giant virtual reality world called the OASIS. When the creator of the OASIS dies, he leaves behind a secret contest hidden inside the virtual world — whoever solves three incredibly difficult puzzles will win his entire fortune and control of the OASIS. Wade and his friends are "gunters" (egg hunters) who have dedicated their lives to finding these clues, but they're also being chased by a huge evil corporation that wants to win the prize for themselves. The story is packed with action, friendship, and a ton of references to 1980s movies, music, and video games that make it feel like one giant treasure hunt through pop culture history.

The audiobook is narrated by Wil Wheaton, who is honestly the perfect person for the job. Wheaton is best known for playing Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation, and since the book is full of nerdy references, it feels like he genuinely gets the story in a way not every narrator would. He brings Wade to life with a voice that sounds like a real teenager — excited, nervous, and determined all at once. He also does a great job switching between different characters without it feeling awkward or overdone. If you're a fan of video games, adventure stories, or just want something that's impossible to put down (or in this case, turn off), the Ready Player One audiobook is a fantastic listen.
